We have a student intern at the office who is from one of the expensive colleges along Taft Ave. Well, there is a long standing joke about kids from this college - they have the money but they don't exactly excel academically - so their college just milks the money off of their parents.
Anyway, since day 1, the difference in the status of this boy has been very pronounced. Compared to the other interns who seem to have no resources for dressing properly in an office setting, this guy actually has several somewhat tasteful preppy clothese to choose from. He brings his Ipod to work which is probably common to some kids but not all have media players in their pockets. Then later on he started bringing his own laptop, I don't know for what purpose (maybe he found our office equipment not to his own liking, haha). This kid is lucky because his family is well off. And the difference in his lifestyle to that of his peers is very effident. Even in my time then, not everyone had cellphones, you are even lucky to have a desktop.
Then today, one of the managers here was saying that he didn't realize it was the intern who was honking at him at the car park today. He actually didn't think that the honk was for him because according to the manager he did not know anybody who owned a Ford Everest. (I know this is like spiced up for humor, but essentially, yeah. Neither do I. I don't know anyone who drives an Everest but I have friends with beamers, so on...)
Honestly, I hate the intern's college. I think it's because of this particular market niche that schools learned to capitalize on offering education - or rather to make huge profits out of these kids' money. Since they can't pass the entrance exams anywhere and still they want a degree, they offer it at such a ridiculous premium because the parents are willing to do almost anything just to have their kids get a degree. Even if the degree sounds silly or is just a subject course in another college or uni. I am not generalizing though. Probably there are kids here who really wanted to go to this college even if they qualified elsewhere because their friends ended up there. Or whatever their story.
In fairness to our intern though, the guy has been very efficient and the manager here who handles him is quite satisfied with the work he has been producing. Which is good. He actually contributes to this office and people generally like him, or at least they don't have violent reactions like with my former intern (who was unexplainably terrible). Meeting this intern has actually altered a bit my thoughts about this college, where incidentally my ex ended up after failing repeatedly his calculus in engineering at another university. Hahahahahaha. You see, I have such a good reference that to see the stereotype disproven is actually quite a novelty to me. Hahahahaha...
Peace... sa lahat ng graduate dito, walang personalan.
